Do Air Purifiers Actually Work? An Honest Answer

Yes — a correctly sized air purifier measurably cuts airborne particles. Where they fall short, why CADR matters, and when you need active sterilisation.

Short answer: Yes — with conditions. A purifier sized to your room, with enough CADR to deliver 3–5+ air changes per hour, demonstrably reduces airborne particles such as dust, PM2.5 and allergens. Removing odours and VOCs needs an activated carbon stage, and neutralising germs quickly needs active sterilisation, not filtration alone. Most disappointment traces back to an undersized or wrongly specified unit — not to the technology failing.

The honest answer: yes, with three conditions

We sell air purifiers, so you would expect us to say they work. But we deploy them in clinics, childcare centres and offices across Singapore, and those clients measure results — so we will give you the practitioner's answer rather than the marketing one.

Air purifiers genuinely work when three conditions are met. First, the unit must be sized to the room — enough clean-air delivery to turn the air over several times an hour. Second, the filter stack must match what you are removing — HEPA for particles, activated carbon for gases and odours. Third, the mechanism must match the goal — a passive filter traps germs, but only an active system neutralises them quickly.

When any one of these is wrong, the purifier hums away doing very little. That is where the "waste of money" reputation comes from.

Why so many people end up disappointed

Almost every "my purifier did nothing" story we hear comes down to one of four mistakes.

  • Undersized CADR. A compact unit rated for a bedroom cannot keep up with a living room or an open-plan office. It cleans a small bubble of air while the rest of the room stays untouched.
  • Passive filters only clean air that reaches them. A HEPA filter is not a force field — it treats whatever the fan pulls through it. Tuck the unit behind a sofa, leave doors wide open, or run it on the lowest speed, and most of the room's air simply never passes through the filter.
  • No carbon stage for smells and gases. HEPA captures particles. Odours, cooking smells, formaldehyde and VOCs are gas molecules, and they sail straight through a HEPA filter that lacks an activated carbon layer.
  • Running it a few hours a day. Particles are generated continuously, so purification has to be continuous too. Switch the unit off and the room drifts back to baseline.

None of these are failures of air purification. They are failures of specification — which is fixable.

What a properly sized purifier demonstrably does

For airborne particles, the physics is settled. H13 is defined under EN 1822 as capturing at least 99.95% of particles at the most-penetrating particle size — the hardest particles to catch. Every AIRE room purifier uses H13 medical-grade HEPA as standard, capturing at least 99.95% of particles down to 0.1 micron. That covers dust, pollen, pet dander, mould spores and the fine PM2.5 that penetrates deep into the lungs.

This is also why public-health bodies treat clean-air delivery as real infection-control infrastructure, not a gadget. Public-health guidance since the pandemic (including the US CDC) recommends targeting at least 5 air changes per hour of clean air in occupied spaces. And Singapore's haze advisories recommend staying indoors with windows closed and running an air purifier when air quality reaches unhealthy levels.

In short: the question is not whether HEPA filtration removes particles — it does — but whether your particular unit moves enough air to matter in your particular room.

The sizing maths that decides whether it works

Here is the calculation we run before every deployment. Required CADR (m³/h) = floor area (m²) × ceiling height (m) × target air changes per hour (ACH).

Two worked examples. A 20 m² bedroom with a 2.6 m ceiling at 4 ACH needs 20 × 2.6 × 4 = 208 m³/h — a Fillo Plus at CADR 300 m³/h covers it with comfortable headroom. A 50 m² office at 5 ACH needs 650 m³/h — that is Pro 800S territory (CADR 800 m³/h), not a compact unit turned up loud.

Filtration is not sterilisation: why mechanism matters

There is a second layer to "does it work" that most buying guides skip. A standard HEPA purifier traps bacteria and viruses on its filter — but trapping is not the same as neutralising. Captured organisms sit on the filter media and decay passively over time.

We tested this directly. In chamber testing, our approach — H13 filtration paired with active sterilisation using UV-C light plus copper-silver ion technology — eliminated more than 99.99% of tested airborne pathogens (E. coli, Staphylococcus albus, Influenza A) within 60 minutes. The same organisms took roughly 4 hours 23 minutes to decay passively on a standard HEPA filter.

The UV-C stage sits inside a sealed chamber, so it treats the airstream without ever reaching occupants. This distinction — passive capture versus active elimination — is why two machines with identical CADR figures can perform very differently on air hygiene, and it is the core of our 7-layer technology stack. For homes, capture is usually enough. For clinics, childcare centres and anywhere vulnerable people gather, mechanism matters.

What an air purifier cannot do

An honest answer includes the limits, so here are ours.

  • It cannot clean what never becomes airborne. Dust already settled on surfaces, or germs transferred by touch, are outside its reach — keep cleaning and hand hygiene in place.
  • It supplements ventilation; it does not replace it. Fresh-air exchange still matters, and a purifier works alongside it, not instead of it.
  • It cannot promise medical outcomes. A well-specified purifier reduces the airborne load and helps lower exposure — meaningful support for infection control — but no purifier can promise that nobody in the room falls ill, and you should be sceptical of any brand that claims otherwise.
  • It needs maintenance. A saturated filter moves less air and captures less; scheduled filter changes are part of the deal.

If a purifier is pitched to you without any of these caveats, that is marketing, not engineering.
