Best Air Purifier for Haze in Singapore: A Sizing Guide

Why Haze Is a Job for H13 HEPA

Haze in Singapore is smoke from regional land and forest fires drifting over. The fraction that matters for your health is PM2.5 — particles fine enough to penetrate deep into the lungs, and small enough to seep indoors through door gaps and ventilation openings even with the windows shut.

Required CADR (m³/h) = floor area (m²) × ceiling height (m) × target air changes per hour (ACH). Aim for 3–4 ACH at home, 4–5 in offices, and 5 or more in clinics.

The examples below assume a typical 2.6 m ceiling — measure yours if it differs.

HDB bedroom (about 12 m²): 12 × 2.6 × 4 ≈ 125 m³/h
HDB living-dining area (about 30 m²): 30 × 2.6 × 4 ≈ 310 m³/h
Open-plan office zone (about 60 m²): 60 × 2.6 × 5 = 780 m³/h

Buy headroom, not the bare minimum. A unit rated well above your requirement can hold the same air quality on a lower, quieter fan speed — which matters when it runs day and night through an episode.

Close windows and doors. Every open gap re-loads the room with PM2.5 faster than the machine can clear it.
One unit per occupied room. A single purifier in the living room does nothing for the bedrooms. Move the unit with you, or cover each room you actually use.
Run it continuously. Clean air decays quickly once the fan stops while outdoor PM2.5 is high. Use auto mode by day and sleep mode at night.
Mind the aircon. Recirculating aircon works fine alongside a purifier; just avoid fresh-air intake modes while outdoor air is unhealthy.
